This one won a silver medal, I think the date on the bottom is 1877:
The sketches below are drawn about 29 years later. They are taken from a sketch book loaned to me by my mother by Dora, the artists namesake and grand daughter. Unusually DB dated them, so we know they were drawn in 1906.
If you agree that this little boy is about ten years old that means he is William Lowthian Barden:
This is DB's oldest daughter, Mary Kathleen Barden. She must have been a favourite because there are many sketches and a painting of her. I will try to give her a page of her own later.
We think that this is a sketch of DB's sister, Catherine, aka Katherine Flavelle
Guessing here too; this is probably Dorothy Gladys born 1893. Otherwise known as Auntie Dolly.
Just a sketch, based on a Millet painting but isn't it lovely!
Dora's grand daughter, also called Dora has this miniature drawing
Do you have any of DB's work that you would like to add to this collection? If so please have it scanned or take a good digital photograph of it and add it to this blog, or send it to me, Judith or Bobby.
